(Soprano) Joy's background in music is primarily instrumental. Throughout school she received training in the flute, which developed over the years into a passion for the recorder. She has performed with a number of recorder and early music ensembles, and for several years was a featured performer with the chamber group Flauto y Basso, which produced a concert series of Renaissance and Baroque music.

The singing that started as a sideline in high school "because I had to" began to take center stage when she took an opportunity to sing in Detroit with the Fort Street Chorale. Over time, she also participated in other Detroit-based groups such as German Masters Chorus, the Langsford Singers, and the Ad Hoc Chamber Choir. After a week-long adventure living outdoors in Minnesota (in January!) with Outward Bound, Joy got sick and lost her voice. Silenced on doctor's orders for a month, she realized how much she enjoyed singing and how much she would miss it if she couldn't do it anymore. The following year she auditioned for the Detroit Concert Choir and was privileged to help win the prestigious Choir of the World  title at Llangollen, Wales.

Joy is also a founding member of the Lime Lake Choral Society, which is gaining renown in northern Michigan.

As a member of the Detroit Concert Choir, Joy has sung in several performances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and has been thrilled to be a part of the competition choir for their tours to Wales, Spain, Austria and Italy. In her expanding role with the DCC, Joy has served as our travel manager, competition liaison and Basque language coach. A primary role for Joy is previewing international competitions for the choir.

Joy maintains a particular interest in a cappella performance, sings on Sundays at Old Christ Church, and has studied voice with Michele Marszalkowski. Currently employed by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Joy is simultaneously pursuing a master’s degree in education at Wayne State University.
